Creating a Sustainable Future Together: Engaging Elementary Students in Climate Solutions
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues we face, and students know this. A 2020 survey of over 500 Alberta youths revealed that a strong majority of students are concerned about their future as a result of climate change and want to learn what we can do to address it. In this highly engaging session, learn how to steer clear of gloom and doom and instill confidence, optimism and connectedness in young learners by nurturing a positive relationship with nature. We’ll also demonstrate how it’s never too early to engage your students in real-world, age-appropriate climate solutions that are fun and build hope and agency as students learn how they can play a role in helping build a sustainable future. We’ll also share connections to the Alberta curriculum and many high-quality resources you can use immediately with your students.

Carbon Capture and Our Energy Transition
CCUS gives us confidence that Alberta and Canada can meet their climate change goals. Enhance Energy collaborates with companies that are capturing and transporting carbon emissions, bringing them to our sequestration facility in Central Alberta. This year we’ve sequestered over 1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions – that’s like taking 350,000 cars off the road! In this session, you’ll hear about where CO2 goes, how we do it and how we make sure that it stays there. The session on Carbon Capture and Our Energy Transition supports teachers as you add excellent energy, environmental and climate education program to enrich your knowledge that can be readily transferred to your students. The session will showcase how carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) contributes to the transition to net zero in multiple ways. The session will highlight the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) and how Alberta is an amazing place for CCUS. The session will also discuss offsets, the Alberta Carbon Hub and collaboration in the industry to make it happen.

Permeating Laudato Si: Cultivating a Green Catholic School from the Inside Out
How do we help our students' respond to God's call to be stewards of creation while learning about complex Catholic social teachings? In this session, you will learn more about the importance of Laudato Si and how teaching students the Catholic Moral Decision Making Framework can guide them to action. See an example of how this was developed in a grade 4 classroom. Walk away with a planning template, ideas and resources to help you share this way of living with your students and staff.

Pope Francis's first encyclical, Laudato Si, addresses all of humanity and calls us to address the deep rooted causes of the ecological crisis facing the Earth. Rooted in Scripture, he provides guidance on how to resolve these issues. As leaders in Catholic education, it is our responsibility to help our students learn about Church teachings and use these teachings to grow in their faith and be stewards of the Earth.

This session will be applicable to both classroom and school-wide social justice projects.

Bear Necessities or Necessary Bears?
Take a walk on the wild side as we investigate one of Canada s most loved, feared, and misunderstood, wild animals. Unfortunately, the long-term outlook of the grizzly bears in our province is uncertain. Ever-expanding development, recreation, and resource extraction continue to increase while populations dwindle and habitat quality decreases. Biologists consider the grizzly bear to be an indicator species used to assess ecosystem health making them an excellent vehicle for learning about larger issues such as ecosystems, biological diversity and community, and population biology.

In this interactive session, adapted from CPAWS's Grizzly Bears Forever program, you will take part in curriculum-linked grizzly activities. Designed to inspire students (and adults) to become the next generation of grizzly bear stewards, these activities will help you better understand human impacts, how to stay safe in bear country, and how to advocate for these amazing animals!

Explore Before Explain in Elementary Science: An Instructional Sequence to Help our Students Make Meaning
When teaching elementary science we often focus on the discrete hands on investigations which is essential, but how do we know students are understanding the scientific concepts connected to the topic we are working on? This practical session will focus on how to plan and teach science using the 5E instructional framework (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate) to promote conceptual understanding with our program of studies. Particular focus will be placed on helping students make connections between the 'Explore and Explain' phase of this inquiry framework.

Research indicates that students' reading comprehension improves when they develop content knowledge (Willingham, 2014). Science builds students' background knowledge about how the world works. In this session you will learn when and how to introduce science vocabulary and how to use informational text to support knowledge gained in investigation.

The Importance of Storytelling for Science Education: Weird, Funny, Useful
How James Joule's Honeymoon, Gilbert Lewis' mysterious death, killer Giant Beavers, and the cross-curricular story of Nylon can help to engage students, illuminate the process of science, and incorporate indigenous perspectives into your science teaching This talk will address the importance of storytelling for humanizing scientists and revealing the process of science in science education. Examples of stories (with curricular ties) are included for divisions 2-4, with an emphasis on high school (since that's my world). Attendees will leave with some stories they likely haven't heard before, and concrete ideas for using stories to help incorporate indigenous perspectives into their classroom.
