Creating in the Music Room
Creating is an important and challenging aspect of the elementary music curriculum. In this session Joyce will demonstrate ways to engage students in creative activities to demonstrate understanding of musical concepts using movement, instruments, and online tools. As a music specialist, I know first-hand the value of sessions which focus on the particular context of the music classroom. This session will provide teachers with activities which will meet the curricular concept of creating in fun and engaging ways.

No Touch Games and Dances
Do COVID protocols have you scratching your head as to how to play music games? Even without COVID, some students may be hesitant to touch or join hands, and yet singing games and movement activities are a rich source of music for teaching many concepts and for reinforcing skills such as pitch and steady beat. In this session, Joyce will introduce fun and engaging games that students can do without any touching, plus you'll learn strategies to help you adapt some of your old favourites.

As a music specialist, I know first-hand the value of sessions which focus on the particular context of the music classroom. Games and movement are an integral part of music education activities, and this session will provide valuable strategies for making them fun without contact between students.

Canada's Black Music History: Sing, Move, Listen, and Play
Five years ago Alberta officially recognized Black History month and thus the contributions that people of African descent have made to the province and the country at large. Elementary music educators have been using a limited range of pieces from the African diaspora in their classrooms for years, however this session seeks to extend the repertoire in use and connect it to the history and the experience of Black Canadians and to its potential for skill building and developing music understanding in young children. The session will include call and response repertoire for nurturing vocal development, singing games from the diaspora, and spirituals to sing, listen to and play. The session also seeks to introduce, for K-6 children, the significant musical contributions of three national treasures: composer and choral director Nathanial Dett; internationally renowned soprano Measha Brueggergosman Lee; and jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson and his Canadiana Suite. This session includes call and response repertoire for nurturing vocal development, singing games from the diaspora, spirituals to sing, listen to and play and moving to Oscar Peterson’s Canadiana Suite
