Engaged practice is one of the most effective means of helping students attain mastery of math concepts. Hands-on math games provide repeated episodes of engaged practice. Participants will play and learn a variety of hands-on math games that will focus on addition and subtraction at the grade 1 through 3 levels including fact fluency and multi-digit operations. Variations for each game will also be highlighted, providing opportunities to differentiate the games to best meet the specific needs of individual students in each classroom. The games will use as manipulatives common cards and dice which most schools and homes already have or can easily obtain. Specific content will include: adding and subtracting fact fluency; multi-digit adding and subtraction strategies with and without regrouping, composing and decomposing of larger numbers; number line strategies for 2-digit addition and subtraction leading to mental math strategies. Students work samples will be shared throughout the session along with teaching tips and management strategies. A handout will include game instructions, variations and gameboards as well as skills checklists to assess student learning.
