Explore Before Explain in Elementary Science: An Instructional Sequence to Help our Students Make Meaning

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Feedback form is now closed.
When teaching elementary science we often focus on the discrete hands on investigations which is essential, but how do we know students are understanding the scientific concepts connected to the topic we are working on? This practical session will focus on how to plan and teach science using the 5E instructional framework (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate) to promote conceptual understanding with our program of studies. Particular focus will be placed on helping students make connections between the 'Explore and Explain' phase of this inquiry framework.

Research indicates that students' reading comprehension improves when they develop content knowledge (Willingham, 2014). Science builds students' background knowledge about how the world works. In this session you will learn when and how to introduce science vocabulary and how to use informational text to support knowledge gained in investigation.
